Daihachi Yoshida's debut film gets its WORLD BLURAY DEBUT!
Official selection of the 2007 Cannes Film Festival!
The offspring of the Wago family have their world turned upside down when their parents are run over because a cat stood its ground in the middle of the road. High-schooler Kyomi seems most upset, but this is as nothing compared to the distress she feels on hearing that her big sister Sumika is on her way home – just in time to miss the funeral. Sumika's stepbrother Shinji is more ambivalent about Sumika's arrival, but then they share a past. Shinji's put-upon wife Machiko will meet Sumika for the first time. Her downtrodden existence will look rainbow-coloured by comparison.

The Snake Girl and the Silver-Haired Witch
What do you get when Noriaki Yuasa, director of Daiei Studios’ much-beloved Gamera series, makes a monochrome film adaptation of the works of horror manga pioneer Kazuo Umezu (The Drifting Classroom)? The answer is 1968’s The Snake Girl and the Silver-Haired Witch, a fantastically phantasmagorical slice of twisted tokusatsu terror ostensibly made for children that will irreparably traumatise any child that sees it!
Making its worldwide Blu-ray debut and its home video premiere outside Japan, this rarely-screened, nightmarishly disorienting creepshow not only displays a seldom-seen side of kaiju auteur Yuasa, but its skilful blending of Umezu’s comics (published in English-language markets as Reptilia) arguably anticipates many of the trends seen in J-horror decades later.

Blind Beast
Blind Beast is a grotesque portrait of the bizarre relationship between a blind sculptor and his captive muse, adapted from a short story from Japan’s foremost master of the macabre, Edogawa Rampo (Horrors of Malformed Men, The Black Lizard, Caterpillar).
Blind Beast is a masterpiece of erotic horror that explores the all-encompassing and overwhelming relationship between the artist and his art and the obsessive closed world that the artist inhabits, with maestro director Yasuzo Masumura (Giants and Toys, Irezumi) conjuring up a hallucinogenic dreamworld in which sensual and creative urges combine with a feverish intensity.
Out August 20th
